Project

The National Alcohol Indicators Project succeeded in establishing a set of 5 major indicators of alcohol related harm: alcohol-attributable mortality and morbidity, alcohol related road crashes, self-reported patterns of drinking, per capita alcohol consumption and alcohol-related violence. Substantial efforts have been made to develop and improve the underlying methodologies for all indicators. These are now well-established as are systems for collecting and reporting these data. Trends and levels of each indicator have been reported for each state and territory in separate statistical bulletins (bulletins one to five) as well as in one major report providing state and territory trends for the last decade. Two more bulletins (bulletins six & seven) on alcohol-attributable harms for young people and under-aged drinkers have since been disseminated. Bulletins eight, nine and ten respectively focused on alcohol-attributable harms among older Australians. Bulletin 11 was the first to address alcohol-attributable mortality among Indigenous Australians and a paper was published in the Drug and Alcohol Review in 2009. Another paper providing an overview of the NAIPís outcomes so far was also published in the Contemporary Drug Problems journal in late 2009. Bulletin 12 has provided updated information on alcohol-attributable deaths and hospitalisations and work is now underway on updating figures for selected types of alcohol-attributable conditions, and will be the basis of upcoming bulletins.
